As a young child growing up, my best friend was Bill. Bill and I were the same age, in the same class at school, and went to the same church. We saw each other every day. Our parents were good friends, so we spend a lot of family time together.
We liked to ride bicycles, play in the park, play cowboy or Indians, cops or robbers( I use the word or because we were always on the same side, partners rather than enemies) and hiked in the woods, where we could climb trees, swing on grape vines and build secret cabins.
Usually on Saturday morning, Bill and I, along with other neighbor friends would walk to the movie theaters in downtown Beckley to see the latest Walt Disney film. We each had 2 quarters in our pocket - one for a ticket and one for enough candy to last to walk home.
As Forest Grump would say, “ we were like 2 peas in a pod”.

I didn’t really have friends we I was very young, the kids I hung out with were my siblings. We we booted out of the house early in the morning, and could come back for our dinner. We did spend a lot of time in the woods, climbing trees,( I was aTom boy) building forts, having pretend meals. We would also go and swing on grape vine. As I progressed through school still didn’t have a lot of friends, but I had people that had my back, for example in 7th grade we were intergraded into all black jr high school, at that time they didn’t like white people coming into their schools. So many fights happened, and some black kids were picking on me, a black girl came up to me and said if you walk the halls with me for a couple of days, they will not bother you, I did and they didn’t bother me. I also walked to school through a black neighborhood, she said I shouldn’t be doing that alone, she said she would walk me through the neighborhood once and I would be ok. This was of her going out of her way, but she did that for me. She had my back! Others were the same way through jr high and high school.
